What happened to Microsoft FrontPage?
It is an amazing thing that people constinue to utilize software that hasn't been supported for years or had certainly ever evolved with the Internet, but it's true!
In our home office in the heart of Portage County, Ohio we've even seen the former local Economic development director retire to continue the development of the Front Page hosting business he started while holding his government office. Well, in fairness to him, he did a decent job organizing and publishing information to promote our local communities, even though for years we felt a bit bitter and always thought the role of government wasn't supposed to compete with free enterprize. These days, it really doesn't matter much any more to our small company if the local governments wish to sit back and collect our tax revenue while we work with other institutions world-wide and effectively grow in the world of E-commerce while their web sites remain more often than not with stagnant information. Gee whiz, maybe some day we'll even get big enough to have a reason we could argue to move our company to a small tax exempt island with plenty of job opportunities near the equator ;)
What's also really amazing is that anyone that can afford a publishing
tool has found themselves in the Internet web production business, even
though they may not completely understand the actual code or the value
of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you are with a web publishing
and/or hosting company that has not evolved themselves beyond outdated
non-supported software and can't keep up with the Google Patents as
they become public and cause radical change with Internet data
management technology in general, then maybe you should consider
switching to a company with a proven track record!
I quote from Micrsoft Office Front page site at URL:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/frontpage/FX100743231033.aspx
"After nine years of being an award-winning Web authoring tool,
FrontPage will be discontinued in late 2006. We will continue to serve
the diverse needs of our existing FrontPage customers with the
introduction of two brand-new application building and Web authoring
tools using the latest technologies: Office SharePoint Designer 2007
for the enterprise information workers and Expression Web for the
professional Web designer.".
So now we come to April of 2008 and the best thing Microsoft has
going in the way of Internet web site publishing tools is Silverlight!
Not that we dislike Silverlight, but content management systems like
Joomla are becoming recognized as effective web production tools while
many of the other former tools are becoming more valuable as web
add-ons for the eye candy appeal.
