How to start a facebook network for your company

facebook logoFacebook workplace networks have been on my mind ever since I signed up with facebook. I finally committed myself to investigate exactly how to establish a facebook "company network" for my company. Today, I also decided to research and publish my findings that it might benefit our clients and of course, anyone else that may be interested in starting a facebook workplace network.

Facebook networks are selected by each user in their account settings. A facebook network can be established for your high school, college, and workplace. Having a facebook network can also be a unique and creative Internet marketing tool. Facebook networks don't cost anything to establish.

The old adage us geeks used to laugh about is "read the doc's, stupid", so I proceeded to the facebook help page at URL: http://www.facebook.com/help/ and clicked on "networks", then on the upper right I saw "I'm having trouble adding or joining a network." so I clicked on that link which took me to a page detailing information about the various types of facebook networks which included:

What type of network are you trying to add?

A work network:
Please note that if your company does not distribute official email addresses to employees, we will be unable to create a workplace network for you.

If you have a work email address that has the company domain, please click this link.

If you’re not receiving the confirmation email, please check your email application's spam or junk folder or filter.
A college network:
In order to join one of our college networks, you need to have a valid email address from one of the schools we support. This email account needs to be set up to send or receive external emails. To accommodate alumni, we accept school affiliated alumni email addresses, which are available at many schools (often for free) through their school or alumni association.

If your school does not provide you with an email address, you will not be able to join that network at this time.

If you have an email address from your school, but aren’t able to receive the confirmation email, please check your spam and junk-related folders and filters.

If you’re still unable to add a college network, please click here.

If you cannot add your college or university because it is not supported, please click on this link.
A high school network:
If you do not have an option to add a high school network to your account, then you may be ineligible to register with a high school at this time. If you currently attend high school and are between the ages of 13 and 18 but have not provided this information accurately, please use the link at the bottom to contact us – we’ll then be able to update your account. If you are over the age of 18, you will need to add your high school information to the Education section of your Profile, as you are no longer eligible to add a high school network. Note that people will still be able to find you in a Classmates Search.

If you are unable to add your high school network because you have recently switched high school networks, you may need to wait until the block expires before adding a new high school. If you are registered in a high school that you do not currently attend, please use the form below to contact us – we’ll then be able to update your account.

If you are unable to add your high school network because we do not support your high school, we can help to add the network to Facebook. Please click here to contact us with your high school information.
Upon clicking on work network, I went to form page which included:

My Work Network Doesn't Exist on Facebook Yet

Name of your employer:

Email address supplied to you by your employer:

Work's website:

Upon completing the three fields, shortly thereafter, I received an email to my company email address which included:

 Hi,

Facebook currently supports high school, college, and workplace networks.

If you would like us to create a network for your high school or college, please send an email from your school email address (if you have one) to networkrequest@facebook.com with the following information:
1. Full name of your school
2. City
3. State, country
4. Your school’s website
5. Whether your school provides email addresses to students (yes or no)
6. Your graduation year
7. Please also copy and paste this email (which should include your login email address associated with your account)

If you would like us to create a network for your workplace, please send an email from your work email address to networkrequest@facebook.com with:
1. The name of your workplace
2. The official website of your workplace
3. Your official work email address (unfortunately if your company does not distribute official email addresses to employees, we will be unable to create a network for you)
4. A copy of this email (which should include your log-in email address associated with your account)

Once we receive this information, we will be able to assist you.

Thanks,

The Facebook Team

So I responded from my company email account and now we are awaiting their response... I'll update this to inform you if i start seeing our facebook company network, how long it took. Just checked on Sept 29th 2010 9:06am EST and the facebook network still wasn't there and I also haven't seen any further emails.... stay tuned :)

OCT 27th 2010 FACEBOOK EMAIL RECEIVED UPDATE:

I received this email which included all the quoted correspondence regarding my facebook network application:

					Hi Joe,

I am sorry for a slight delay in our response. We've added your workplace to our list of supported networks. Within the next 48 hours you should be able to register for that network using your work email address. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for contacting Facebook,

Adam
